Extractions

Dental extractions are a common and safe procedure performed under local anesthesia to remove teeth. We always aim to save natural teeth whenever possible, but extractions are sometimes the best way to protect your overall oral health and prevent further complications.

Dr Berge is an expert with extensive experience, he will ensure you are comfortable and confident - knowing will be done as quickly and pain free as possible.

When Dental Extractions Are Needed

Dental extractions can be recommended or required for several reasons, including:

  • Severe tooth decay: when a tooth is too damaged for treatments like fillings, crowns, or root canals.
  • Advanced gum disease" periodontal disease can weaken the bone and tissues that support a tooth, causing it to become loose.
  • Broken or damaged teeth: when teeth that are fractured above or below the gumline or cannot be restored may need to be removed.
  • Impacted teeth: some teeth—often wisdom teeth—become trapped beneath the gums or bone and may require removal.
  • Overcrowding: in certain cases, teeth may be removed to create space for orthodontic treatment.

Types of Dental Extractions

There are two main types of extractions:

  • Simple extraction: performed when the tooth is visible above the gumline. It involves loosening the tooth before it is pulled.
  • Surgical extraction: required when a tooth has broken at the gumline or hasn’t fully erupted. It involves making an incision in the gum tissue to access the tooth.

Recovery and Healing

Most people recover within a few days and are advised to:

  • Rest for the remainder of the day
  • Avoid drinking through straws for a short time
  • Eat soft foods while the area heals
  • Follow cleaning and care instructions

Planning for Tooth Replacement

When a permanent tooth is removed, Dr Berge will discuss and recommended replacement options.

  • Dental implants
  • Bridges
  • Dentures

Replacing a missing tooth can help maintain your bite, prevent neighboring teeth from shifting, and preserve your smile.
